Brand new film’s creator and you may director, Robert Rossen, creates a good multidimensional chess video game, to own mortal limits, between Johnny, their manager (Thomas Gomez), their boss’s spouse (Ellen Drew), good cagey police inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you will a beneficial scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whoever sister (Nina Foch) worked in the gambling enterprise and you may dated a beneficial corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). Brand new caustically epigrammatic program, brand new cast’s suavely regulated gestures off love and you will menace, and you will Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and you may stylishly cocky pictures (also his political conscience) get this pugnacious yet , detailed spectacle an invisible vintage of your category.” [ ten ]

While the area employs a familiar pattern, the characterizations is actually fresh as well as the performances sufficient to help you overbalance. Evelyn Keyes performs the great absolutely nothing woman who brings out new best in him and Ellen Received is the sleek and slinky vixen which becomes your on the jams. Thomas Gomez try greasy given that villain and you may Lee J. Cobb really does a different ready tour given that a weary police inspector just who finally closes the actual situation. A lot of drinking and you will puffing is done of the the worried.” [ several ]
